With that being said, you don’t have to run out to buy courses to become a virtual assistant. Simple everyday skills that you already frequently perform can help you to earn an income as a VA.

Skills such as being proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher can make you money.

Research plays a key part in your decision-making process. Researching your market will help you to better connect and communicate with potential clients.

Look for gaps in the virtual assistant market that your services could fill. Try to identify opportunities and possible obstacles in your market.

Don’t skip this step as it will help you to plan a business strategy. It helps you to know where to invest your time and energy to position you for an effective financial outcome.

Survey your future clients to help you gain insight into the type of service they are looking for.

Websites like Survey monkey, survey gizmo, and Zoomerang all offer free survey plans. Use the free plan to survey your potential customers. Ask your customers what areas they need help in the most.

You won’t be able to do everything, so decide on a niche to offer your service in.

Choose a high paying profitable niche area, like technical support. VA that offers technical support naturally gets a higher hourly rate.

Google Alert is a fantastic way to monitor your niche. Just enter the keywords used in your niche and set up an alert. Every time your keyword is mention in a blog post or a news article google sends you an alert.

5) Start a blog

Every business needs to have a blog. Starting a Blog will give you more exposure and help you to attract future clients. 

Ensure you have a great about page giving a detailed outline of what services you offer as a Virtual Assistant. Create a portfolio of the services you offer and the price for those services. ,

Another reason to have a blog is to create more income for yourself. Monetize your blog by adding affiliate links, ads and by creating and selling courses.

6)  Create A Social Media Presence

Optimize your profile to get maximum exposure.  Especially on LinkedIn.

Build your social media account and be an active user and influencer in your space. Reach out to other virtual assistants and make new friends and advertise your business.

7) Network with other virtual assistants

One of the fastest ways to get exposure as a virtual assistant is to find other Virtual assistants and network with them.

Let other VA know what services you offer. You can collaborate with other VA for jobs. They will also recommend you for VA jobs that they are not skilled in.

Working with other virtual assistants is also a good way to stay abreast of information on where to find potential clients and companies that will employ you.

8) Consider working for free

I know, I know, nobody wants to work for free. Nevertheless, hear me out. when you are a new Virtual Assistant you have no referral or experience under your belt. Clients may feel they’re taking a chance to employ you.

To help your clients feel more comfortable it is best to have testimonials on your blogs. The quickest way to get testimonials is to offer your service for free to selected clients.

I don’t suggest working a 40hr week for free.  
Just an hour or two. In return, ask the client for a testimonial to be placed on your blog and don’t be scared to ask for referrals.

What you’ll find is some of the clients that you select to offer your service to for free will like your work and offer you more paid work.

Another way to think of it is that you are offering a trial period to help the client decide if they should hire you.

9) Gain experience from Virtual assistant companies.

Cold pitching is sending emails advertising your services to potential clients in hopes of getting hired. Try to formulate a good template that states your name or business name and the services that you offer.

Explain to your future customer how you’re service can help them make more money and grow their business.

List who you have helped before and ask your potential client to check out the testimonial on your blog. This is where working for free (tip 7) to get your foot in the door pays off big time.

Some virtual assistants may not like cold pitching but it is an excellent way to get paying clients. Don’t get discouraged when someone does not answer just move on its business as usual.
